Premier League 20/21 Opening Day – Betting Preview

Premier League 20/21 Match Week 1 Betting Preview
It has been a lightning-quick turnaround for Premier League clubs in terms of their preparation for the 2020-21 season, with the final game of the previous season only being played less than two months ago. However, another wild Premier League season is upon us, and the next nine months promise to be an unpredictable and enthralling competition.

Liverpool vs Leeds United

The pick of the fixtures from the opening round of games will see the defending champions take on newcomers Leeds United. It has been 16 long years for Leeds fans, but they are back in the big time, and there is an expectancy that they are targeting something greater than merely staying in the division. Meanwhile, Liverpool will be looking to successfully regain their title, but will likely face fierce competition from sides such as Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea who have all strengthened over the summer months.

Success in the Premier League last term made it a stellar year for Liverpool last term, but as any coach would tell you, defending the title is a challenging proposition. The Reds have lost Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren over summer months, and Reds fans will be hoping that new signings arrive at the club before the window slams shut next month.

Liverpool Quiet on Transfers

Kostas Tsimikas is the only new arrival at present. The Reds played in the curtain raiser for the new season against Arsenal before the international break, but they were beaten on penalties by Mikel Arteta’s squad. Jurgen Klopp downplayed the defeat and indicated that this was when the season really gets started.

Marcelo Bielsa is one of the finest managers in world football, and there will be great excitement around the world to see how he deals with life in the Premier League. Leeds were promoted to the top-flight after winning the Championship last term, and they have wasted little time in bringing in new players to the club.

Jack Harrison came in on loan, while the club smashed their club record transfer fee to bring in Rodrigo from Valencia. There will be pressure on the £26 million signing to perform in the top-flight. Meanwhile, Robin Koch is a signing that has also gone under the radar after impressing for Freiburg.

Leeds will be delighted to be back in the top-flight, but it doesn’t get much harder than a trip to the champions to open the season. They will likely put up a good fight in this fixture, but the Reds have to start the season with three points.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton

Jose Mourinho will begin his first full season in charge at Tottenham with a tricky test against Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton. Spurs have been making the headlines over recent weeks following the release of their Amazon Prime documentary All Or Nothing, but they will be hoping that their football is doing the talking on the opening weekend.

Mourinho has wasted little time in bringing in players that are tailored to his style of play, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg being the big summer recruit. Spurs have spent wisely this summer, and the addition of Matt Doherty could prove inspired. The former Wolves right-back was a mainstay of the Wolves side that has achieved great things since being promoted to the Premier League, and it will be interesting to see whether the Irishman can make the step up.

Everton’s New Signings

Ancelotti will also be starting his first full season in charge at Everton, and there is already a sense that he has began to transform the side to fit his image. Allan was a vital player for the Italian during his reign at Napoli, and his transition to life in the Premier League could be pivotal to what the Toffees can achieve this season. James Rodriguez has been the biggest name arrival to the club this summer, and he will likely be deployed in the number ten position behind Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

This is a testing opening day fixture for both of these clubs, and it will be fascinating to see which way it goes. The stats would favour Spurs to get the win, but a good Everton performance will certainly appease the Toffees faithful ahead of the long season ahead.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Chelsea

It’s fair to say that there will be a lot of eyes on Chelsea on Monday night, as football fans wait to see how the new signings that have been brought into the club have been gelled together. However, Brighton shouldn’t be overlooked either as they have been making steady progress under Graham Potter.

There hasn’t been a buzz around a season like this at Stamford Bridge for many years, with the Blues spending big in the hope of bridging the gap between themselves and the top two. The signings of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz will give the Blues an extra lease of life in the attacking third, with Werner likely to lead the line after his impressive season for RB Leipzig last term.

Chelsea’s Bolstered Defence

Havertz is certainly the signing that has captured the imagination as the German is set to be a superstar. However, it’s the defensive signings that could make all the difference, with Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell certainly likely to improve the shaky defensive record that the Blues had last term. Frank Lampard will be under more pressure to achieve success, but time will tell whether it is a season too early to be challenging for the league title.

Last season was a breakthrough year for Brighton as they managed to stay in the top-flight by playing a completely different style of play than the days under Chris Houghton. Potter certainly deserves a lot of credit, and there is a sense that Brighton could surprise a few this season. Adam Lallana was brought in on a free at the beginning of the window from Liverpool, and will add even more assurance in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, Joel Veltman is another player than certainly understands how to play out from the back.

This will be a difficult opening assignment for Brighton, but all the pressure will be on Chelsea to live up to the hype that has been building over the summer. With Werner wanting to bag on his Premier League debut, we can see a Chelsea win a Werner contribution.
