Betting Preview: ITV Racing Newmarket 26/09/2020
It has been another difficult week in the world of racing after it was revealed that the pilot event that was due to take place at Newmarket this coming weekend had been postponed. Government guidance means that no fans will be admitted, which will come as another blow to racing in the United Kingdom. While fans will not be in attendance, there are three huge group races for gamblers to look forward to from Newmarket on ITV.
The Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2)
The group action at Newmarket gets underway with The Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes. The race is open to two-year-old colts and geldings and is run over one mile. This race is one of the most exciting during the Cambridgeshire Meeting, and there have been some notable winners throughout its history. Previous winners include Frankel and Roaring Lion.
Aidan O’Brien has trained the last two winners of the Royal Lodge Stakes, and he trains the two favourites in the field. High Definition comes into the race after winning on his maiden start at Curragh last month, while Van Gogh was second last time out at Leopardstown. Krypios is another of O’Brien’s horses in this race, and also comes in off the back of a win last time out.
There will also be interest in New Mandate and Gear Up, who have both won their last two. However, both these wins have come over seven furlongs. The preference is for High Definition to continue the excellent start to his career.
The Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1)
There are two Group 1 races in an hour on ITV on Saturday, and that kicks off with The Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes. This race is open to two-year-old fillies and is run over six furlongs. It is typically a race that is used as a stepping stone to the 1,000 Guineas for the following year. However, the last horse to win both way Special Duty, who won the 1,000 Guineas in 2010.
Miss Amulet and Dandalla are the two standout contenders in this competitive field. Miss Amulet is trained by K J Condon and will be ridden in this race by Ryan Moore. She has been in excellent form this season and has already won three from four starts. The most recent of those was the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (Group 2) at York in August. Dandalla has won three from three, with the most recent of those victories coming in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) in July.
Gamblers looking for more value could look at Happy Romance. She has won her last two over six furlongs, while Umm Kulthum has also won over the same distance this season. However, the preference is for Dandalla, who has already showcased her ability over six furlongs at Newmarket this year.
The Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (Group 1)
The final Group 1 action of the Cambridgeshire Meeting at Newmarket is The Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes. Colts aged two are able to run in this race, and it is run over six furlongs. Famous past winners of the Middle Park Stakes include Charming Thought, Ten Sovereigns and Earthlight. Aidan O’Brien is the leading trainer in this race, as he has won it six times, which includes winners in two of the past three.
His leading chance in this race is St Mark’s Basilica, who won over six furlongs in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden. This should be the most competitive race of the day, with six of the runners having won group races this season. The Lir Jet is an intriguing 10/1 chance and has won two from four starts this season for trainer Michael Bell. Supremacy is also an interesting selection and has won two from three this season.
However, the preference is for Tactical for Her Majesty The Queen. Tactical has won two from four this season. He was able to follow up her win in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot with another win in the Tattersalls July Stakes (Group 2) at Newmarket in July. It was a fifth-place finish in the Darley Prix Morny- Finale des Darley Series (Group 1) at Deauville last time out, but with William Buick back on board, he is our pick.
