Betting Preview: ITV Racing 9th January
The racing world has been rocked by the latest lockdown measures imposed by the British government, which means that the show must go on without fans. ITV will have a number of exciting races this weekend, which is headlined by the rescheduled Welsh Grand National at Chepstow.
Betting on Chepstow & Kempton Races
Coral Welsh Grand National (Grade 3)
Unfortunately, one of the races that many would have been looking forward to over the festive period fell victim to the weather, as the Welsh Grand National was called off. However, there will be a second chance for runners and riders to win this illustrious race as it will take place this weekend. The Grade 3 race is run over three miles and six furlongs.
Secret Reprieve was the favourite for the race at the end of December, and that will once again be the case for the rescheduled race. The Evan Williams-trained horse has been in great form at the course this season having already won the Coral Welsh Grand National Trial Handicap at the beginning of December. The extra time away from the track would have likely been beneficial for this horse.
Truckers Lodge hasn’t declared at the time of writing but would be an excellent chance should he enter the race. He won the Midlands Grand National last year and has solid form at Chepstow.
Yala Enki is also worth a look for Bryony Frost. Frost made history on Boxing Day by becoming the first winning female jockey in the King George onboard Frodon. We wouldn’t put it past her to win the Welsh Grand National with the talented Paul Nicholls ride.
Silviniaco Conti Chase (Grade 2)
There looks to be an exciting field for the Silviniaco Conti Chase renewal at Haydock on Saturday. This race has been won by huge names in the past, such as Frodon, Top Notch and Waiting Patiently. Horses aged five and over are eligible to enter this competitive race.
Nicky Henderson has a dominant record in the Silviniaco Conti Chase, as he has won three of the five instalments. His two leading chances in this race at Master Tommytucker and Riders OnThe Storm. Master Tommytucker will be the pick for the Henderson horses, as he has won on his only appearance at the track. That win came in the Back And Lay On Betfair Exchange Graduation Chase in November. However, the favourite will be a difficult horse to pass, as Imperial Aura has won on both starts so far this season.
Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle (Grade 2)
One of the other races that has been rescheduled to take place this weekend will be the Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle. The race was supposed to take place at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day, but heavy snowfall meant that it was postponed. This Grade 2 affair will be run over two miles and five furlongs.
Summerville Boy will be looking for a second straight win in this race. The Tom George horse has only won once since that success at Cheltenham last year, with that win coming at Aintree in November. The fact that the race will take place at Kempton instead of Cheltenham will be detrimental to his chances.
Paul Nicholls’ excellent record at this track means that the favourite is an excellent chance, and if he can repeat the performance from his win at Chepstow earlier in the season, he will be the one to beat. On The Blind Side and Younevercall have both recorded wins at Kempton in the past and will be worth second looks.
