Saturday Race Preview: Goodwood & Newmarket 01/08/2020

Goodwood Newmarket Horse Racing Betting Preview 1st August 2020
An unbelievable five days at Glorious Goodwood comes to an end on Saturday with more high-quality races on ITV. Earlier in the week fans watched on as Stradivarius won a fourth straight Goodwood Cup with an imperious performance, while Space Blues landed the Qatar Lennox Stakes. But, what runners should punters have their eye on this Saturday?

Goodwood 3:00: The Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2)

There will be a treat for the 5,000 fans that will be in attendance at Goodwood on Saturday as the Lillie Langtry Stakes will take place on the weekend this year instead of on Thursday. This race is a Group 2 affair that is open to fillies and mares that are three or over. It will be run over one mile and six furlongs, and notable winners in the past include California, Simple Verse and Endless Time.

The favourite in the market, Enbihaar will be trying to create her piece of history in this race, as the five-year-old will be looking to come only the third horse to have won this race on two occasions. The John Gosden-trained horse will certainly fancy her chances after winning this race in the second-quickest time ever last year. However, since that success, she has failed to win a Longchamp and Newmarket, but she remains the standout contender.

Manuela De Vega could be the closest contender for the reigning champion as she has won her last two starts for Ralph Beckett. Both of these successes have come at Haydock, with the most recent of those coming in the Bet365 Lancashire Oaks. Dubious Affair could also attract each-way attention as she is currently priced at 25/1 with Bet365, but has won its last two starts. However, this will be a big step up in quality. The preference remains for Enbihaar to create her piece of history.

Goodwood 3:35: Unibet Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap)

One of the most competitive handicap races of the day will take place in the Stewards’ Cup. This race will be open to horses aged three and older and is run over six furlongs. It has been a recurring race at Goodwood since 1840, and a case could be made for all of the horses in the field this year. Winners over the past three years have included Lancelot Du Lac, Gifted Master and Khaadem.

There is no doubting the abilities of Nehaarr and Meraas in this field, with Nahaarr being trained by William Haggas, who has won this race on two previous occasions. The four-year-old comes into this race having won at Newbury last time out, while Meraas was rode to success at Hamilton.

The selection for this race is a slightly bigger priced horse in Rewaayat (14/1). The five-year-old is trained by last year’s winning trainer Charles Hills and has won its last two. Rewaayat hasn’t been beaten in 2020 yet and was particularly impressive last time out to win the Join Racing TV Now Handicap at Salisbury.

Newmarket 3:15: British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes (Listed Race)

The featured race from Newmarket on Saturday will be the British Stallion Studs
EBF Chalice Stakes. This race will be run over one mile and four furlongs and it looks set to be another competitive one for punters. The winner last year was Love So Deep for Jane Chapple-Hyam. The likely favourite going into the race will be Katar for Sir Michael Stoute.

The three-year-old was in excellent form last time out as he won the Unibet Extra Place Offers Every Day Fillies’ Novice Stakes. However, there could be more proven horses involved that could show his shortcomings. Makawee hasn’t won this year to date but is beginning to show form. He has finished second once and third on two occasions.

Bella Vita is one of the horses in the field that was involved in this race last year and finished second. The Eve Johnston Houghton-trained horse would be the preference to go one better this year in a wide open race.
