How many managers leave in a season
Permanent managers who left a Premier League club during the season, over the last ten seasons: 7.4 a season on average. Summer departures are not counted.
Does sacking the manager work?
Across the 106 in-season sackings since 2010/11 with five league games either side, 76 of the 106 clubs picked up more points after the change.
Part of that bounce would have come anyway: clubs tend to sack managers after their worst run, and results usually drift back towards normal on their own.
How the index works
What goes into the score
- Recent form 26% Points from the last five league games, with cup games counted at a lower weight.
- Table against expectation 26% League position against last season's finish (promoted clubs are expected to finish 18th), plus how close the club is to the bottom three. It counts for less early in the season.
- Winless run 14% League games without a win. A cup win doesn't end the run.
- xG trend 16% Expected-goals difference per game over the last five, and whether it is getting better or worse.
- Points against xPts 8% Points won against expected points (xPts). A side picking up fewer points than its chances deserve is under less pressure on merit.
- Goal difference, last five 10% Goal difference over the last five league games.
- A new manager's score is scaled down over his first six games, so a fresh appointment doesn't top the index on his predecessor's results.
- Caretakers and interim managers are shown but not ranked.
- Where there isn't enough xG or xPts data yet, those parts drop out and the others are reweighted.
Pressure bands
- Low 0 to 24
- Watch 25 to 49
- High 50 to 74
- Extreme 75 to 100
How it would have done
We replayed every matchweek of 2023/24 to 2025/26 with the same scoring. Of the 18 managers sacked or let go by mutual consent during those seasons, 14 were in our top five the week before they went (13 in the top three). Going by the table alone, 12 of them had a club in the bottom five at that point. Four weeks out the index is no better than the table: 9 of 17 were in our top five, against 11 in the bottom five.
About the odds
Chance is the probability the prices imply once each bookmaker's margin is taken out, averaged across the bookies that price the market. Some bookies share a platform and carry the same prices: Ladbrokes and Coral, and Unibet, BetMGM and LeoVegas. The best price for a manager is highlighted only where the bookies differ.
Updates and sources
We check who manages each club twice a day and confirm every change before it reaches this page. Prices are collected four times a day, and the index updates after each gameweek.
Managers: the Premier League's data, Wikipedia and club announcements, confirmed by us.
The index reads public performance only. It can't see a club's finances, the dressing room or what the owners think, so it isn't a forecast of when anyone will be sacked.
Sack race questions
Who is favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked?
Michael Carrick (Manchester United) is the favourite at 2/5 (Coral, Ladbrokes). Odds move quickly, and the table above shows when each price was checked.
How many Premier League managers have been sacked in 2026/27?
None so far this season. Eight managers left their clubs over the summer, and they are all listed above.
Who is the longest-serving Premier League manager?
Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, in charge since 22 Dec 2019.
How does a "next manager to leave" bet settle?
It pays out on the first Premier League manager to leave his job, whether he is sacked, resigns or goes by mutual consent. Bookmakers differ on caretakers and on exits between seasons, so check the rules on the bet before you place it.
How is the pressure index different from the odds?
The odds are the bookmakers' view, and they include their margin. Our index is built only from results, the table, xG and how each club is doing against last season, so the two don't always agree. When they differ, that's worth a look.
